A Stay at The New St. Regis Kanai Resort

Tucked away in the gated community of Kanai, just a 40-minute drive from Cancun airport, you'll find the new St. Regis Kanai Resort, sprawled across a vast 1,235-acre property. With Mexico’s preservation efforts, only 8% of the land can be developed, so there's plenty of space to roam on this 2-square-mile haven, complete with over a mile of private beach! The resort is large but despite its size, the vibe remains laid-back, with just a handful of hotels, including the St. Regis and the neighboring Etéreo, a charming Auberge spot that popped up in 2022, and the brand-new Edition, that just opened in February 2024.

Surrounded by endless mangroves and lush greenery, the hotel blends seamlessly into the adjacent Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Wooden walkways wind their way through the property, offering easy access to restaurants, beach clubs, and more. And if you're feeling lazy, hop on a golf cart for a lift!

GETTING THERE

Once you land at the airport, you'll notice plenty of shuttle services around, both private and shared, that you can arrange ahead of time. And if you need it, there are even wheelchair-accessible van options. I personally went for the private van round-trip arranged directly through the hotel, for approx. $140 each way. You can also take a taxi from the airport - just keep in mind that Uber will not work here due to legal disputes.

most distinctive highlights

1. Every single room has a 24 hour butler service!

Yes, you read that right! From the time we checked in, to the time we departed, our gracious butlers, Xavier and Rafael catered to our every need, making sure we are well taken care of. Throughout my stay, they were always just a text away for assistance. Plus, I took advantage of the complimentary daily steaming and ironing service—such a convenient perk! No fuss!

2. Without a doubt, the best pool cabanas in Kanai!

They're decked out with a slick indoor/outdoor vibe and some come complete with a private bathroom and shower.

3. A pool that fits your vibe!

We had options galore when it comes to pools here! From the family pool to the main one, plus an adults-only beach club pool and a serenity pool at the spa—it's like there's a pool waiting for you around every corner!

4. A stunning spa!

Taking inspiration from Mayan cosmology, the spa incorporates a collection of Mayan-infused services into its exclusive menu! Felt so pampered with the welcome hibiscus drink and lemon chocolate!

5. Private plunge pool, yes please!

Certain rooms come with their own private plunge pools, offering a secluded spot to unwind and take it all in!

NOT JUST ANY LUXURY BEACHFRONT HOTEL - best of the best!

In this part of Mexico, you'll find no shortage of luxurious beachfront properties, but this one really stood out to me, with its unique architecture by Edmonds International, drawing inspiration from the Pleiades constellation. The buildings have a graceful, curving design that appears to hover over the lush green mangroves. With 124 rooms and 19 suites, each offering stunning vistas of the Caribbean Sea, there are unparalleled views of the region's largest undisturbed coral reef!

The gorgeous entrance into the resort

The hotel snagged the "Best New build Hotel" title at the esteemed 2023 Ahead Awards, and I must say, I was completely taken with the design and architecture of everything—from the restaurants and rooms to the spa, walkways, and common areas.

Loved the breezy feel of the resort with lots of seating areas

It's just a feast for the eyes in every corner and space. What I especially liked about the resort, was the interconnected network of elevated walkways outside and the long, breezy and open-feel pathways on the interior. Plus, it's a photographer's dream! The stunning design makes for some seriously awesome photos too!

The interconnected walkways over the mangroves

One thing I absolutely loved about this trip is how convenient it is to reach Cancun with direct flights from most US airports. And compared to the bustling resorts nearby, this place felt like a hidden gem—so secluded, private, and untouched.

OUR room

Every room has an ocean view here! We (2 kids, hubby and I) definitely splurged and stayed in the St. Regis Suite, with a king size bedroom equipped with a terrace and large private plunge pool. The suite was an absolute treat with a total 1130sqft, 1.5 bathroom, a dining area and a very large separate living room. We typically book 2 separate rooms but this suite was super spacious and we had plenty of room for ourselves and our belongings. The room was flooded with sunlight, offering fantastic views and outdoor space to chill out. The interior design, is all about embracing those lush natural materials, giving a nod to Mexican and Mayan vibes.

Can we take a moment to gush about the master bathroom?

My husband and I were absolutely smitten with it—we're already planning to model our next bathroom after this one!Slick sliding wooden panels close off the bathroom from the walk-in closet, opening the way to the absolutely stunning green marble double sinks placed strategically across from each other, creating a beautiful symmetry in the space. You will also find a generous soaking tub with lavender salts, a marbled walk-in shower and large dressing table.

Some really considerate touches include a closet that's conveniently accessible from both the bathroom and hallway, boasting plenty of drawer space (a real miracle!) and bonus points for the steamer and abundant outlets throughout.

STAR OF THE SHOW - OUR VERY OWN PLUNGE POOL

The terrace, boasting its own plunge pool, truly stole the show during our stay! It provided a perfect oasis where we could unwind and soak up the sun. With enough room for at least four people to comfortably lounge in the water together, it encouraged moments of relaxation and connection.

Additionally, the terrace was outfitted with a sun bed, table, and two chairs, creating a cozy and inviting space where we could enjoy meals, sip on drinks, or simply bask in the serenity of our surroundings. We found ourselves drawn to the terrace time and time again, making the most of every opportunity to indulge in its tranquil ambiance - the sunrise, sunset and nighttime with the sounds of the insects in the mangroves was just lovely!

all the touches…

Typical of the service promised by the St. Regis brand, from the minute we arrived, we were spoiled with welcome green detox juice and the pampering never stopped! Who doesn’t enjoy a warm welcome amenity? The staff had left us a tray of the most delicious chocolates made in-house, along with a personalized welcome note.

Every evening during turn down service, we were greeted with a thoughtful gesture—a floor mat and slippers placed beside the bed, offering a warm welcome to the morning ahead. And as if that wasn't enough, they even provided a lavender pillow spray, ensuring that our dreams were filled with visions of returning for another stay :)

SIPS & BITES

The resort has 5 distinct restaurants and everything we drank and ate was phenomenal! If you want more options, you can also visit the Edition or Etereo hotels next door for more variety!

Toro, by celebrity chef, Richard Sandoval

Hands down, my top dining experience was at Toro, curated by Chef Richard Sandoval with a latin American menu.

The feast at Toro, kicked off with fresh short rib tacos, followed by a tantalizing tuna ceviche that I could have devoured by the bucketful. The crab soup was a symphony of flavors, and incredibly delicious. Then came the star of the show—the lomo saltado infused with an asian sauce, most tender beef filet with crispy sweet potatoes and togarashi aioli! And let's not forget dessert—a delectable corn cake, straight from the chef's grandmother's recipe book, topped with a delightful hibiscus gel and caramelized popcorn. It was a culinary journey I won't soon forget!

We indulged in the continental breakfast at Chaya every morning, and it was an absolute feast. The spread featured a refreshing cold bar stocked with tropical fruits and juices, a delightful yogurt and cereal station, an array of pastries and croissants, as well as tempting sweet breakfast treats like French toast. It was the perfect start to each day! You can also order a la carte from the menu which is quite extensive. I opted for the egg white omelet loaded with spinach, peppers, onions, and cheese, and it was absolutely delicious. Served alongside a generous helping of sautéed veggies, it made for a satisfying and wholesome meal.

Water feature outside Chaya

Beyond the restaurant, you'll find expansive water features that create soothing sounds, adding to the tranquil ambiance.

Located on the breathtaking beachfront of Quintana Roo, Riviera is a smart casual restaurant blending the essence of the Mexican and Mediterranean Rivieras, offering a delightful fusion of flavors. We savored fresh seafood salads and other mouthwatering dishes made from locally sourced ingredients, all while basking in the inviting Mexican sun! And the kids couldn't get enough of the chicken sandwich on a bagel with fries—it was a hit!

You can also enjoy the restaurant menu while lounging poolside on the day beds that float over the pool. It's the perfect way to indulge in delicious food while soaking up the sun and enjoying the water!

A visit to a St. Regis Bar is always a highlight for me, and this particular one lived up to my expectations and then some. One of the standout experiences is the festive evening Champagne sabering ceremony, which adds a touch of excitement to the atmosphere. It's truly a spectacle and always sets the tone for a memorable evening. And when it comes to drinks, the cocktail menu is nothing short of impressive. With an extensive selection of expertly crafted concoctions, there's something to suit every palate. It's the perfect place to unwind and indulge in the art of mixology while soaking in the sophisticated ambiance of the St. Regis.

The St. Regis Bloody Mary, also known as the "Red Snapper," is an iconic cocktail that has become synonymous with the St. Regis brand. It was first created in the early 20th century by Fernand Petiot, a bartender at the King Cole Bar in the original St. Regis hotel in New York City. The recipe typically includes vodka, tomato juice, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, salt, pepper, and various spices. However, each St. Regis property around the world often puts its own unique twist on the classic recipe, incorporating local ingredients or flavors to create a signature version of the cocktail.

I simply had to try "The Kanai Mary," a unique twist on the classic Bloody Mary that embraces local flavors. This version incorporates corn, peppers, and cucumber—ingredients inspired by the ancient Mayan diet. The result? Exquisite!

For adults only experience, kick back at Jack’s Club, a laid-back American sports bar featuring an outdoor terrace and plunge pools. Indulge in a mouthwatering selection of finger foods, including truffle fries, mini burgers, and touchdown wings, all while catching the excitement of the big game.

The resort also has a deli - Pik Nik, that offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner to-go from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. You'll discover a variety of delectable pastries, some of which are also served at Chaya. Additionally, you can choose from a selection of sandwiches, wraps, salads, fresh fruit, and yogurt to satisfy your cravings on the go. I picked up a coffee and pastry on my evening walk back from the beach to the room daily!

POOLS & CABANAS

With three pools available that are all managed by a lifeguard, even when the resort is fully booked, you'll likely find a spot to unwind. While we were there, the resort was at 50% capacity and we felt that we had most of the pool are to ourselves. The Beach Club caters to the adults-only pool. Situated in front of Riviera, the family pool offers a unique experience with its excellent daybeds suspended above the water. These daybeds provide the perfect combination of comfort and tranquility, allowing guests to relax while enjoying the gentle sounds of the pool and ocean waves. After exploring all the other lounging areas available, we found ourselves drawn to these daybeds time and time again, making them our ultimate favorite spot to unwind and soak up the resort's serene atmosphere.

The whirlpool

My kids were absolutely thrilled with the hot whirlpool situated adjacent to the smaller pool. With its bubbling waters and soothing warmth, it quickly became a favorite spot for them to spend their time, adding an extra layer of enjoyment to our poolside experience.

While I didn't linger long at the Beach Club, I couldn't help but notice the adults-only pool and bar, which offer a serene retreat for those seeking a break from the hustle and bustle. With direct beach access, it's the perfect spot to unwind and soak up the sun in peace.

BEACH & LOUNGE

Nestled between the beachfront loungers, complete with umbrellas, and the inviting pools, there's a magical space that truly captivated me. Here, you'll discover hammocks and outdoor seating options, each thoughtfully arranged to offer a unique and inviting experience. From cozy nooks tucked beneath swaying palms to expansive lounging areas awith plush cushions, there's a spot to suit every mood and preference. What truly elevated the ambiance was the overhead "sunbrella" fabric gracefully strung between the trees, casting a gentle dappled shade over the entire area. It created a tranquil oasis where one could escape the sun's rays while still basking in the natural beauty of the surroundings.

R & R unlimited!

The beachfront is the largest amongst the three properties in Kanai, and offers ample space for guests to relax and unwind. During our time there, it felt like a secluded paradise, with plenty of room for everyone to find their own spot to enjoy the sun and sand. Despite being a popular destination, the beach never felt overcrowded, allowing for a peaceful and intimate atmosphere.

Of course, like many beaches in the area, there is some sargassum seaweed washing ashore but, the resort's staff were quick to respond, efficiently clearing it away to maintain the pristine beauty of the beach. There was a very dedicated crew assigned to clearing anything that was washing ashore and their diligent efforts ensured that we could continue to enjoy the shoreline! It was quite pristine!

Unlike many resort beaches in the area there was a sense of exclusivity and it's a place where you can truly unwind and escape the hustle and bustle of daily life, surrounded by the natural beauty of the Caribbean coastline.

The spa

Step into the spa and enter a world of indulgence and relaxation. Spanning an impressive 9,500 square feet indoors and an additional 6,700 square feet outdoors, the spa's expansive size is balanced by its intimate ambiance. Thoughtful design elements, including glass walls that offer glimpses of the surrounding nature, create a serene atmosphere enriched by the use of natural materials such as dark woods, marble, and stones.

The beautiful entrance to the treatment rooms

The waiting area for lounging before treatments, equipped with tea, fruits and nut snacks

Upon arrival, I was treated to refreshing hibiscus juice and lemon-infused chocolate—a welcoming gesture that sets the tone for the luxurious experience to come.

Next, are invited to explore the scent bar, where they embark on an olfactory journey to select the perfect aroma for their upcoming deep-tissue massage—an exquisite touch that ensures a personalized and memorable treatment.

Before indulging in their chosen treatment, guests have the opportunity to experience the hydrotherapy area, complete with a sauna, steam room, whirlpool, cold plunge, and relaxation pool. This tranquil oasis, complimentary with a spa treatment but also available for separate booking, provides the perfect escape for relaxation and rejuvenation.

The spa features seven treatment rooms, each designed to offer a serene and tranquil setting for guests to unwind and pamper themselves. Separate locker rooms for men and women ensure privacy and convenience, while a co-ed lounge provides a space for relaxation before or after treatments. Additionally, there's an exclusive lounge available for bridal parties or other special occasions, adding an extra touch of luxury to any celebration.

This experience was a new one for me, but I must say, I thoroughly enjoyed it! As an added surprise, I was offered chlorophyll water, a unique beverage that not only tasted delightful but also boasts detoxifying properties for the body. It was a refreshing and invigorating addition to my spa experience, leaving me feeling rejuvenated and energized.

Overall, the spa at this resort is not just a place for relaxation—it's a sanctuary for the senses, where guests can escape the stresses of everyday life and immerse themselves in a world of luxury and indulgence.
